Maine Medical Malpractice Insurance
The Cost & Availability of Medical Malpractice Insurance in the State of Maine
In 2003, the legislature in Maine passed “An Act to Provide Affordable Health Insurance to Small Businesses and Individuals and to Control Health Care Costs”, or the Dirigo Health Reform Act. Section E-22 of the act requires the superintendent of insurance to submit a report that includes data on medical malpractice lawsuits, amounts on awards for non-economic damages, and the cost and availability of medical malpractice insurance.
This report has concluded that Maine’s average medical malpractice insurance premiums are less than half of the modern nationwide average. The average medical malpractice insurance premiums in Maine have consistently ranked as one the ten lowest states in the United States.
